With a flare for words that even Dr Seuss would be envious of, we chatted to Lil' Rebel's author Mary Anastasiou to learn about how they engage, inspire, and empower little people on their journey to becoming strong, confident, and mindful big people through their brand new book, I want to be a Rockstar.
Tell us about what inspired you to write “I want to be a rockstar”.
I’ve always loved music and for as long as I can remember I’ve loved to sing, in fact I spent many of my younger years performing in school musicals and with bands. Rock Star came about because I became aware of the ‘Instafame’ trend where TV shows like Australian Idol, The Voice etc were churning out music machines and ‘popstars’ who had no real knowledge of music.
Rock Star became an answer to a question “if I was to be famous - what would I be famous for? What kind of musician/Rock Star would I be?' The idea was to help kids discover the magic of music through imagination and play - the book’s illustrations are a split between dream sequences/imaginings and creating music from everyday household items. Hopefully encouraging little ones to find their own musical path.
What makes your baby a Rockstar?
Luke has always been a Rock Star. Whilst they say that 'the apple never falls far from the tree’ - this one was certainly born with more confidence and bravery than I ever had. Luke has an inquisitive mind, a quick wit, a huge personality and all the charisma of George Clooney - anyone that knows him will tell you that he truly is one of a kind.
Tell us about how Lil’Rebel is supporting the charity TLC for Kids, and why you have chosen this charity?
It’s important to us to support as many little people as we can, that’s why we’ve pledged that a portion from the sale of every Lil’Rebel book or product will be donated back to a nominated children’s charity.
Currently our commitment lies with TLC for kids - a National children’s charity who work tirelessly behind the scenes helping hospital staff and medical experts to support sick kids and their families. ‘I want to be a Rock Star’ and the ‘I want to be…’ series of books will raise valuable funds to help this amazing charity continue to do what they do best.
What can we expect in the future from Lil’Rebel?
‘I want to be a Rock Star’ is the first in a series of ‘I want to be…’ titles. Each title (Movie Star, Sports Star, Teacher) focusses on the various genres within each category. The idea is to open kids up to the possibility that they can become anything they want to be. With a strong focus on career, following your passion and fulfilling your dreams.
